On 23rd 2019, MS Dhoni completed 15 years in International Cricket. He started his international career in 2004 against Bangladesh. He scored duck in his first inning and got run out. After some initial hiccups he never looked back and he ruled world cricket with his finishing skill, Captaincy and Cool attitude.
Cricket Australia has recently announced ODI team of this decade In which Dhoni has been appointed as Captain. In this post, I am recalling his top five ODI knocks of all time.
1) 91* against Sri Lanka, World Cup Final 2011
This is one of most memorable nights for every Indians when India won ICC World Cup 2011 against Sri Lanka. India won world cup after 28 Years which was won by Kapil Dev in 1983.
On night of 2nd april 2011, India were Chasing target of 275 to win world cup title in Wankhede Stadium. India lost 2 wickets early and then world cup seemed to be going away from India. Dhoni decided to promote himself ahead of Yuvraj Singh.
MS Dhoni finished 91* off 79 balls in which he hit eight fours and two sixes .He stitched much needed partnership of 109 runs with Gautam Gambhir, .
Dhoni was adjudged the man of the match.
2) 183* against Sri Lanka, 2005
Sri Lanka scored 298 runs in Sawai Mansingh Stadium Jaipur. In reply, Sachin departed early and then Dhoni walked in at 3.
Dhoni slaughtered Lankan bowlers as he scored a 183-ball 145 at a strike rate of 126.20 including 15 fours and 10 six. This knock still remains the highest score by a wicketkeeper batsman in ODI history.
3) 148 against Pakistan, 2005
Dhoni maiden ODI century came against Pakistan at Visakhapatnam in 2005. Dhoni came to bat at 3 after Sachin departed early. Dhoni had good partnership with Sehwag first and then with Dravid and finished with 148 runs off 123 balls.
With help of splendid knock, India made 356 in 50 overs, in reply to which fell short of 58 runs. He was named Man of the Match.
4) 44* against Australia, 2012
India were set a target of 270 by Australia in Adelaide and the match went down till last over. MS Dhoni made an unbeaten 44 off 58 which included only one boundary and a six that came off in final over.
It was a very calculated innings where he kept scoring singles and doubles and waited till time when it was needed to change gears
India needed 12 off four Ball, then MS Dhoni hit a huge six over long-on off Clint McKay’s bowling. This was a much needed win for India after they lost to Australia in the previous match.
5) 45* against Sri Lanka, 2013
India and Sri Lanka were playing the final of the Tri-series in Port of Spain , West Indies. Sri Lanka posted 201 runs on the board.
India were needed 15 runs from the last six balls with only 1 wicket left. Ishant Sharma was on Non-Strike end. MS Dhoni batted exceptionally well in the last over and India won with two balls to spare. His 52-ball 45 not only won India the match but also the tri-series.
